Chris Gayle failed with the bat but struck with his tame off-breaks as the West Indies secured just their second win of a chastening World Cup campaign against Afghanistan on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
West Indies beat Afghanistan by 23 runs in the final group match for both sides at the Cricket World Cup on Thursday. Shai Hope top-scored for the West Indies at Headingley with 77 while Nicholas Pooran and captain Jason Holder stepped up the pace as they reached 311-6 in their 50 overs. Afghanistan mustered 288 all out in reply to fall to their ninth defeat out of nine despite a fighting 86 from Ikram Alikhil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Caribbean side scored 311 for six in their 50 overs in Leeds and although the Afghans put up a brave fight, they ultimately went down by 23 runs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Playing in his 5th World Cup, Gayle told Star Sports that he will still continue to play for West Indies but the ongoing tournament would certainly be his last, adding jokingly ‘unless they give me two years of rest and I come back’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
